GURNARD POST OFFICE
The Sub-Post Office branch in the Village survived at least 2 attacks on its future, most recently at the very end of 2003 when Post Office Ltd. lumped it in with the Cowes Sprawl, and declared its intention to close it as it wasn’t needed. Local opinion, fortunately, changed the Company’s mind!
However, the branch's future was doomed!
Jane Barnard was the last Postmistress at the Branch, but she decided that the time had come in March 2005 to retire. Unfortunately no replacement could be found and so the branch was temporarily closed. It has remained "temporarily" closed ever since and it is likely that Post Office Ltd will never open up another branch in the Village with Northwood now being the closest. The original premises were sold off and the "Two Fishes Delicatessen" opened on the site, followed by Ratsey's Larder which also closed before Sophie Edwards opened up the "Evella Hair" Salon.
EVELLA HAIR
As mentioned above under "Gurnard Post Office", the Two Fishes Delicatessen replaced the empty shop that formerly housed the Village Post Office.
It proved to be very popular, not only in the Village but also from the surrounding area with many folk making special trips.
However it was sold to become Ratsey's Larder, which never quite had the same success as the Two Fishes and it closed down in 2008
The site remained empty for a while until conversion work took place, all resulting in the opening of Evella Hair on 7th December 2009 under the proprietorship of Sophie Edwards.
Sophie said in early February 2010 that she is pleased with her first few months' business, and it seems the Village is supporting the business which is great.
In 2010 Sophie caters for women's (£15 dry cut), gents (£10 cut) and children's (£5 to £13) haircuts and prices vary depending on what's done. There is also colouring which is priced from £21 for a regrowth tint to full head foils at £45 to £50 and perming which ranges from £20 for a top perm through to £50+ for a specialist perm. There are special rates for senior citizens Call Sophie on 295223 for full details
And your host, Sophie!
